Notebooks, 1885-1902.

Notebooks, 1885-1890 and 1887-1902, of New York City physician and obstetrician John Milton Mabbott, recording individual patient examinations, diagnosis, and case histories. Earlier volume, 1885-1890, principally contains entries for obstetrics cases handled by Mabbott while working at the New York Nursery and Child's Hospital at 51st St. and Lexington Avenue. Entries record the patient's name, age, place of birth, marital status, occupation, and family history; followed by notes on the examination, diagnosis, and course of treatment. In addition to obstetrics cases, Mabbott treated patients suffering from ailments such as diptheria, anemia, and senility. Volume also includes autopsy results for a few fatal cases, as well as hospital charts for obstetrics patients at the Nursery and Child's Hospital. The second notebook, 1887-1890, includes several extensive case histories, copies of letters by Mabbott written to colleagues and family members of patients reporting the results of physical exams and his professional diagnosis, and brief accounts of routine examinations made for insurance purposes. Lengthy entries provide detailed descriptions of obstetric and gynecological cases, noting, in some instances, the sexual histories of individual patients and describing complications ensuing from abortions and cases of venereal disease, while providing an account of the medical examination and diagnosis, course of treatment employed, surgical procedures performed, progress of the patient's condition, and outcome of the case.
